General Auto Building | Pearl District

Sitting directly on the Park Blocks in the Pearl District, the General Auto Building reimagined an automotive parts building by joining together two buildings, completing the missing brick façade and adding a distinguished two story cap with corner amenity decks. The spaces within the building are enlivened by the new structural steel that accentuates the existing wood and brick construction.

The adaptive reuse of General Auto is a great illustration of projects that have made the Pearl District a vibrant and remarkable precedent for other revitalizing neighborhoods. The building draws on the beauty of the park blocks, the events that line the corridor and the city’s best food and shopping in the Pearl. This project utilized historic tax credits, energy tax credits and a $1.4M loan from the Portland Development Commission. The project achieved LEED Gold status in 2011.
